Swedish battery maker Northvolt has recently announced on its website that it has launched an advanced sodium-ion battery.
The laboratory has verified that the battery has an energy density of more than 160 Wh/ kg.
The press release claims that the sodium-ion battery is safer and more cost-effective and sustainable than conventional nickel-cobalt-manganese (NMC) and iron phosphate (LFP) systems, as it uses richer minerals such as iron and sodium on the market.
Northvolt The battery is made up of a hard carbon anode and a Prussian white cathode, and does not contain lithium, nickel, cobalt and graphite. The company plans to use this design and manufacturing breakthrough to become the first company to industrialize and commercialize Prussian white batteries.
Sodium is relatively rich on earth and the cost is low, and the ion size of sodium ion battery is very close to that of lithium ion, which can be produced using existing lithium battery production equipment, reducing the production cost. In addition, sodium-ion batteries have higher energy density and longer life, which can achieve longer range and more stable performance. At present, some enterprises have begun to invest in the research and development and production of sodium ion batteries. It is expected that with the continuous upgrading of technology and further cost reduction, sodium ion batteries are expected to become one of the important options to replace lithium-ion batteries.
